The word "azulejo” [tile] comes from the Arabic “azzelij”, "a small polished stone", also commonly associated with the Persian term “lazkward”, "lapis lazuli", due to the fact that a great part of the Portuguese tile production uses this colour. Tiles collection pays a tribute to this Arab heritage, which revealed to be one of the most original productions of Portuguese culture, with its own decorative, geometric, vegetal motifs, and many others features, surpassing simple utilitarian function and becoming art.
